In Canada, the province of Quebec has recorded an increase in greenhouse areas, which has increased production and improved self-sufficiency.
According to Canadian media, the province of Quebec is now achieving 50% self-sufficiency for greenhouse vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and lettuce.
In 2020, the Minister of Agriculture announced more than 100 million CAD (74.3 million USD) for the area of greenhouses to be doubled by 2025 in Quebec. Many producers have made expansions to their existing greenhouses and the objective of 250 hectares of greenhouses by 2025 will be exceeded, according to Quebec professionals.
Energy costs for greenhouse production are high, but the government has announced support for growers. The latest technical advances in greenhouse production allow producers to reduce their electricity bill. According to analysts, despite its energy costs, greenhouse production seems to be the solution for food self-sufficiency.
