Heavy snowfall hit the Kashmir Valley where about 30% of the apple trees were not yet harvested. Immediate damage (frozen fruit, broken branches, uprooted trees) is so important that apple production in the coming years is also threatened.
The Kashmir Valley had not recorded snowfall in November for almost 10 years. This year at the beginning of the month, heavy snowfall hit the region, stopping the harvest of apples and breaking services for several days.
The damage is significant and industry professionals estimate that apple production in the valley could decrease by 20 to 30% next year. In the valley fruit production covers 144,825 hectares.
