Record production of potatoes
FJ
The 2012-13 production reaches a record figure.
Bangladesh has produced 8.60 million tonnes of potatoes in 2012-13. Record figure, above its recent productions: 8.20 million tonnes in 2011-2012 and 8.38 million tonnes in 2010-11.
BBS (Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics) estimates that production is rising because the area has increased and the yield per hectare has made significant progress. Best practices (new seed varieties, pest management, fertilizer use) and a favorable climate helped to obtain this abundant production.
Another probable cause: the prices obtained by farmers, considered remunerative, encourages them to produce. Production becomes profitable and will continue to increase for the next season. Leading to an increase in exports: with a production of 8.60 million tonnes and internal demand of 6.5 / 7 million tons, the possible volume for exports reaches 1.5 million tons or 2.
