After the Indian decision to stop onion exports, Bangladesh is looking for new suppliers. Among them, Pakistan will resume shipments after 15 years of interruption.
A Pakistani daily reported that Bangladesh had placed an order to import 300 tons of onions after 15 years of suspending the onion trade between the two countries. A Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) official said at least 12 onion containers are being exported to Bangladesh.
Not producing enough onions to meet domestic demand, Bangladesh is heavily dependent on India, its main supplier of onions. Because of a shortage due to floods, India banned onion exports. Bangladesh has been looking for new suppliers such as Turkey, Myanmar and Egypt.
