Due to high price of the Indian onion, its wholesale rates currently stand at Rs 24 to Rs 26 per kilogramme.
Onion rates have spiked sharply in wholesale and retail markets of Karachi during the last fortnight in the wake of its large-scale import from India, multiplying financial burden of general consumers.
Currently, domestic onion stock has exhausted completely and the requirement of the country’s population was fulfilled through its import from India from where bulk of quantity is arriving in Pakistan.
During the current season, Pakistan exported around two and a half lac tonnes of the commodity that helped the country fetch precious foreign exchange for the national exchequer.
However, in the process on account of lack of storage facility, growers faced hardship in making any storage of their product consequently the country is now facing extreme shortage of the commodity during the last one month.
During the last 10 days, around 80 onion-laden containers have been off-loaded at Karachi port, each weighing at 15 metric tonnes, which was currently used for catering requirement of local consumers.
The price decline in onion rates is anticipated from the next month when season would start, a financial relief to consumers who are now compelled to pay higher price for Indian commodity.
