Frost threat prompts orchard protection measures in South Korea

Authorities stress preventive orchard management to reduce potential crop losses.
South Korea’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA) has warned fruit growers to remain prepared for spring frost conditions during the flowering period, emphasising the vulnerability of orchard crops such as apples, pears and peaches.
The ministry convened an emergency inspection in early April after forecasts indicated a cold air mass could trigger frost and ice formation across inland production regions, with large day-night temperature swings increasing the risk of crop damage. Authorities stressed the need for preventive measures in orchards, including checking heating systems and monitoring field conditions to protect blossoms during the sensitive bloom stage.
Officials highlighted that timely preparedness and on-farm management are critical to reducing potential production losses, particularly as fruit trees enter early growth phases when exposure to low temperatures can directly affect yield and fruit quality.
The alert forms part of broader seasonal risk management efforts to safeguard horticultural output during the spring flowering period, when sudden temperature drops remain a recurring threat to fruit production.
