Spain is a world leader in the sale of fresh and organic lemons and the second largest supplier of processed lemons, with an annual turnover of 700 million euros, according to data from the Spanish Lemon and Grapefruit Inter-professional Association (Ailimpo).
In a recent conference to analyze the situation in the sector, the director of Ailimpo, José Antonio García, commented that, in a context of uncertainty due to the sharp rise in costs, lemon and grapefruit are in good demand this season, although the organic fruits show a trend of stagnation.
In addition, García emphasized the risks incurred by new plantations, pests from citrus shipments from third countries and few guarantees of water availability, as well as the demand of customers to pay lower prices each time. The director of Alimpio affirmed that getting out of this closed circle is complicated.
For this reason, he stressed the importance of a correct application of the Food Chain Law, positive discriminatory taxation, precise import control, an adequate subsidy for desalinated water, reducing energy rates, improving agricultural insurance, among others.
