Increase of 45.7% in value for Peruvian garlic exports in 2020

The garlic grown in Arequipa, Tambo, La Joya, Santa Rita and El Pedregal is of the Chinese or white garlic variety, has better quality and is sent to the markets of Brazil and the United States, while the Napurí is destined to Ecuador, Mexico and Colombia.
Peruvian garlic exports in 2020 reached more than $ 26 million, which represents an increase of 45.7% compared to 2020.
The increase is due to supplies to Mexico, the main destination of the product ($ 18.5 million, 162 %), followed by Ecuador ($ 4 million, -36.6 %) and the United States ($ 1.8 million, 15.2 %). Together, these 3 destinations make up 93% of garlic exports.
Diana Maraví, the Market Specialist of the Agribusiness Sector of the Market Intelligence Department of PromPerú, commented that the product is grown all year round, with main producing areas in Lima, Huancavelica, Piura, Cajamarca, Tacna, Moquegua and Arequipa.
Arequipa is the first producing region in Peru, with more than 56 thousand tons per year, adding up to 68 % of the national production.
