Decline in Spanish fresh fruit and vegetable exports

During the first quarter of the year, Spanish exports of fresh fruit and vegetables to non-European countries experienced a significant decline, according to local media. In comparison to the previous year's same period, the volume dropped by 25%, amounting to 92,921 tons, while the value decreased by 9%, reaching 126 million euros.
Sales outside of Europe only accounted for 3% of the total volume and 2% of the total value of Spain's exports.
Within the non-European markets, exports to key destinations showed a substantial decline. Specifically, exports to Canada decreased by 43% in volume, amounting to 14,973 tons, and in value by 18%, totaling 22.9 million euros compared to the same period in 2022. Similar declines were observed in Brazil, with a volume decrease of 19% (7,399 tons) and a value decrease of 12% (7.8 million euros).
Regarding the United States, although there was a slight decrease in volume by 2%, totaling 6,396 tons, the value of exports improved by 12%, reaching 20.7 million euros.
