Jordan is a producer and exporter of dates, and is seeking to enter the Brazilian market. A delegation from Jordan was in São Paulo (Brazil) to participate in the APAS food and beverage fair and presented Jordanian dates during the seminar 'Jordan & Brazil – Challenges and opportunities'.
During this seminar 'Jordan & Brazil – Challenges and opportunities', Anwar Haddad who is the president of the JODA (Jordan Dates Association) presented the Jordanian dates. Clarifying that the production of dates is a traditional culture in Jordan, with more than 3,000 years of history. Currently, the planted area is about 4,500 hectares, with about 650,000 date palms. Production is increasing by more than 10% per year and reaches 30,000 tonnes.
Exports reach 10,000 tons per year and are shipped to more than 15 countries. Brazil imports dates but none so far from Jordan.
Anwar Haddad also clarified that in Jordan, most of the date production is of the Medjool variety which is little cultivated in the world. Of the 30,000 tons produced each year, 20,000 tons are Medjool and the rest of the Barhi variety. The climatic conditions in Jordan favor the production of these quality dates.
With regard to the destination markets for Jordanian dates: the United Arab Emirates are the largest importer (21%), followed by Saudi Arabia (14%) which is nevertheless a major producer of dates, then France (12 %), Kuwait (10%), and then the United Kingdom, Turkey, Qatar, Lebanon and Morocco.
