Healthy Avocado is entering the export business to accommodate the needs of our Mexican partners. After 17 years in the business, we enjoy close relations with many growers/packers in Michoacan.
Mexican avocado supply update. It is the tail end of the season and growers are asking 100 pesos/kg, and demanding that packing housesharvest“pelapalo,”which is acontract to harvest all the fruit in the orchard for a set price. It’s challenging to estimate what will be the yield from an orchard in the best conditions – with so much ripe or damaged fruit remaining, it’s almost impossible to judge. The more common method is to buy fruit “a la banda,” in which a different price is set for each size, based on packout, therefore the “ingenieros de acopio” do not have to be so accurate in their assessment of an orchard.
Most of the remaining fruit is in Tancitaro, at 2300 metres (10% of the crop area), and these orchards are owned by a few large growers, who are able to wait for high prices, as the temperature in the higher altitudes is cooler and the fruit is still green.
The USA price is $75.00 FOB Texas, an amazing price with 44 million lbs in the market (10 MM California, 10 MM Peru and 22 MM Mexico). The fruit from the flor loca flowering period will be ready July 1-15, and with low oil content it will have great “legs” – ( good shelf life.)
Healthy will offer conventional and organic fruit in all presentations, including bags.
