The Kenyan government is calling on farmers to increase the volumes of these 2 products to export more widely to South Korea (Photos: hortinews.co.ke/biznakenya.com).
The favorable conditions offered by the South Korean market for Kenyan banana and broccoli exports are business opportunities that Kenyan producers must seize.
Johnson Weru, Principal Secretary for the Department of Commerce in the MoITED (Ministry of Industrialization, Trade and Enterprise Development), explained that South Korea had accepted in 2018 as part of a bilateral agreement between the 2 nations, Kenyan banana and broccoli imports. But the volume of exports of these two products remains "woefully low" according to Johnson Weru.
For export to South Korea, Kenyan bananas and broccoli are exempt from pest risk analysis. They only need to be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate (plant health) issued by KEPHIS (Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate). This can facilitate exports for Kenyan producers.
The government therefore calls on farmers to increase the volumes of these 2 products to seize these commercial opportunities. For its part, KEPHIS asks interested farmers to register in order to carry out the inspection and then be able to issue the phytosanitary certificate.
