If both sides act fast, trade between the two countries could improve quickly.

China is showing interest in buying more farm and factory products from South Africa. After meeting with top leaders from the South African fruit industry, Chinese Ambassador Wu Peng said both countries should work more closely, especially now that global trade is facing many problems.

Economist Wandile Sihlobo explained that China is one of the world’s biggest buyers of farm products, importing $218 billion worth in 2023. Most of this comes from countries like Brazil and the U.S., but China is now looking for new partners. This could be a chance for South Africa to sell more food and farm goods.

South Africa accounts for just 0.4% of China’s agricultural imports as of 2023. To increase this share, South African authorities must engage with China, propose a wider range of exportable products, and address trade barriers such as tariffs and phytosanitary restrictions. With swift action from both sides, agricultural trade could expand significantly.
