Durian leads exports as Vietnam strengthens ties with China and explores new markets in the U.S.
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable trade experienced significant growth in 2024, achieving import turnover of $2.1 billion and export turnover of $6.6 billion in the first 11 months alone. This resulted in a $4.5 billion trade surplus, driven largely by durian, which contributed 40-45% of the export revenue, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
In August 2024, Vietnam expanded its agricultural trade by securing agreements to export frozen durian and fresh coconut to China. This development immediately led to significant contracts, including deals to ship 1,500 containers of coconut.
Demand for Vietnamese fruits such as coconut and passion fruit has also been increasing in the United States, offering promising opportunities for market growth. Additionally, weather-related challenges in Thailand have reduced its agricultural output, prompting increased imports of Vietnamese produce to supply its domestic market and re-export to China.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, emphasized the growing importance of China as a key market for Vietnamese agricultural products, particularly durian. With current growth trends, Vietnam is poised to overtake Thailand as the leading durian exporter to China in the near future. For 2024, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable export earnings are projected to reach $7.2 billion.
