Most countries around the world are easing or removing restrictions on Japanese food imports following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident.
In early November, Singapore announced that the ban on food imports from Fukushima Prefecture was lifted. Shortly after, the European Union eased its restrictions, tests for radioactive substances are no longer required except for marine products of Fukushima Prefecture and wild vegetables.
Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland plan to relax their restrictions in line with those of the EU.
After the 2011 disasters, restrictions had been imposed by 54 countries and regions. Now 60% of governments have completely lifted their controls and some still retain the obligation to submit inspection certificates.
The government, encouraged by the growing global popularity of Japanese cuisine, has made food exports an important part of its growth strategy. The goal is to export 1 trillion yen ($ 9.15 billion) of agricultural, forestry and fishery products this year.
