China opens cross-border e-commerce channel to fresh fruit imports

Improved cold-chain capacity is enabling fresh fruit to move through China’s e-commerce logistics systems.
China has, for the first time, allowed fresh fruit to be imported through its cross-border e-commerce channel, according to a recent report from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS).
The FAIRS report notes that major online platforms JD.com and Tmall have already used this channel to bring in fresh fruit, marking a shift in how imported produce can reach Chinese consumers.
The development has been supported by improvements in cold-chain infrastructure, which have made it possible to handle perishable products within e-commerce logistics systems. Enhanced temperature control and distribution capabilities are enabling fresh fruit to be transported more reliably through these channels.
According to FAS China, the move represents an expansion of import pathways for fresh produce, combining digital retail platforms with strengthened logistics systems. This creates new opportunities for suppliers to access the Chinese market while responding to growing demand for imported fruit through online sales.
