Shanghai receives first 2026 New Zealand kiwifruit shipment with digital clearance support

China’s Shanghai Customs confirmed the arrival of the first refrigerated vessel carrying New Zealand kiwifruit for the 2026 season, marking the start of this year’s import programme for the product.

The shipment included SunGold and red kiwifruit varieties supplied by Zespri and delivered under controlled cold-chain conditions. Authorities reported that customs and inspection procedures were supported by digital clearance systems designed to speed up processing while maintaining food safety and quality standards.

According to Shanghai Customs, the use of smart supervision tools and coordinated port operations helped ensure efficient handling of the cargo from arrival to distribution. The approach is intended to reduce waiting times for perishable products and support stable supply flows into the domestic market.

The arrival of the first vessel is considered an operational milestone that signals the beginning of the peak import period for New Zealand kiwifruit in China. Officials noted that streamlined inspection and logistics processes remain essential for handling large seasonal volumes and protecting fruit quality during transport and clearance.
