Peru introduces national measures to contain strawberry disease

The country moves to contain strawberry disease through mandatory monitoring and plant movement controls.
Peru has introduced mandatory phytosanitary measures to control and contain the strawberry disease Ramularia grevilleana after confirming its presence in a limited number of production areas.
According to Peru’s National Agrarian Health Service (SENASA), the disease has been officially classified as present but not widely distributed and under official control, meaning it exists in the country but remains restricted to specific locations and is subject to containment actions.
The authority confirmed the presence of the disease in strawberry production zones in the regions of Apurímac, Cajamarca and Áncash. These detections triggered the introduction of nationwide control measures designed to prevent further spread and protect production areas that remain unaffected.
Under the new resolution, all producers and operators involved in the cultivation, handling and movement of strawberry plants must immediately report suspected cases of the disease to SENASA and apply approved control practices where infections are detected. The rules also restrict the movement of planting material from affected farms and require the use of certified, disease-free propagation material.
SENASA stated that maintaining continuous surveillance and rapid response capacity is essential to contain the disease and safeguard plant health. The measures entered into force following the publication of the official resolution in April 2026 and apply across the national territory.
