Atacama increases fruit production area

In northern Chile, the Atacama region, which includes one of the driest deserts in the world, is increasing its fruit growing surface.
The last census, called Catastro fruticola 2011, shows an increase of 3% compared to 2005 figures. The area cultivating fruit in the Atacama region reached 11,214 hectares.
Catastro fruticola 2011 notes that the main crops of the region are grapes, olives, avocados, pomegranates, jojoba, tangerines and lemons.
Grapes ranked in 1st place with 8051 ha of crops, with the Red Globe variety accounting for the largest area - 1955.4 ha. This is followed by the olive and avocado.
