Blow to exporters of potatoes in Pakistan, who are threatened with a stoppage of shipments to Russia.
Russia claims that the potatoes imported from Pakistan are infected with a disease and threatens to halt imports, complaining that the agreed quality has not been respected. Russia questions the effectiveness of health services in Pakistan.
In Pakistan, exporters claim that government labs have tested the potatoes and authorized shipments and believe that the Russian threat is propaganda. They say that Russia allowed
massive imports 3 years ago, after the freezing of their crops.
Pakistan exported 100,000 tons of potatoes to Russia last year. So far this year, exports total 50,000 tons. In the Russian market, Pakistan is competing with imports of potatoes from the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, France and Egypt.
