E.Leclerc and Hyper U are the cheapest French chains with "drive through" service.
The French consumer association "Que Choisir" publishes its monthly ranking of the product selection at more than 4,500 grocery stores.
“All united against the high cost of living,” according to Intermarché; “Strong values and low prices” for Système U; and the “Who’s the cheapest?” comparison campaigns run by E.Leclerc… Every major retailer has its own slogan to highlight its low prices. To help consumers see more clearly, Que Choisir compiled a ranking of over 4,500 supermarkets and hypermarkets offering "click and collect" service.
E.Leclerc in the lead
In March 2026, E.Leclerc clearly claimed the title of France’s cheapest retailer offering drive-through service. It is undoubtedly the French retailer that most prominently highlights its low prices, and it must be acknowledged that it is indeed the cheapest on the market. At E.Leclerc, drive-thru services and physical stores are separate, but a survey we conducted last year showed that pricing policies were similar across both channels. The retailer, which originated in Brittany, is the cheapest for both national brands and private labels.
Hyper U and Intermarché in second and third place
Hyper U ranks second on the list. Hyper U stores are the largest outlets in the Système U chain and therefore offer the most competitive prices. Super U stores, which are more numerous and smaller, are slightly more expensive. However, they remain the cheapest in the supermarket category. In third and fifth place, respectively, are Intermarché hypermarkets and supermarkets. The latter are almost on par with Super U, even though the gap with E.Leclerc has widened slightly at the start of this year. The Les Mousquetaires group can rely on its store brands, which are the second cheapest on the market.
Carrefour and Auchan are significantly more expensive
In the second half of the ranking, Carrefour Group stores still show a significant price difference compared to E.Leclerc, although the gap has narrowed slightly in recent months. The group’s hypermarkets are 6% more expensive on average. For a €150 shopping basket, that amounts to a difference of nearly €10. Source: Que Choisir.
