Cold weather affects size and volume of exported mangoes
MD
The weather will mean fewer exports than expected as mango production will be lower with sizes also smaller.
The volume of mango exports will not reach the 10 million boxes as expected. Shipments will be broadly similar to last season with nine million boxes.
Cold weather and late rains have affected crops and led to smaller fruit. At this time last year the volume of production doubles, but harvests have been delayed. Exporters are hoping that the bulk of production will be shifted to the end of the season.
According to the Mango Ecuador Foundation, there are 5,300 hectares of mangoes for export. The most common varieties are Tommy Atkins, Kent, Haden and Keitt.
