Australian producers have begun exporting Sumo mandarins
Brought into the country from Japan 10 years ago, the Sumo range of very large seedless mandarins produced in Australia are now being exported.
The Sumo variety started in Australia back in 2001 and after the quarantine period, small-scale production began in the region of Riverina (NSW). Several producers have taken on production and the crop is estimated at about 500 tons this year, going up to 3000 tons in the coming years.
Producers believe that this variety has great potential. The first Sumo mandarins were exported to Japan and the U.S. (in partnership with Suntreat, a packaging company based in California).
