In Australia around 23.5 million avocado platters are expected to be produced between April 2021 and March 2022. In the 2019/20 season, production totaled 15.9 million 5.5 kg platters (Photo: planthealthaustralia.com .at).
Very good harvests are forecast in the regions of Sunraysa (state of Victoria and state of New South Wales) and Riverland (state of South Australia) thanks to favorable weather conditions and the entry into production of young plantations.
In Australia, avocado production from the 'Tristate' zone, namely the states of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, is expected to increase considerably. After last year's low production where only 435,000 trays (5.5kg) were produced, production for the next season is expected to reach 1 million trays (5.5kg).
According to Kym Thiel, Avocados Australia, the entry into production of young plantation and the good climatic conditions explain this expected increase. No extreme heat during the months of December, January, February and March which could have caused fruit falls.
For this new season, between April 2021 and March 2022, around 23.5 million avocado platters are expected to be produced nationally, the majority coming from the states of Western Australia and Queensland.
During the 2019/20 season, Australia produced 87,546 tonnes of avocados, or 15,917,477 avocado platters (5.5 kg). The state of Queensland produced 43,060 tonnes of avocados (49% of Australian production) and the state of Western Australia 33,239 tonnes (38%). The state of Victoria produced 2,203 tonnes of avocados (2%) and the state of New South Wales produced 6,587 tonnes of avocados (8%).
Australian production is expected to increase further over the next few years, with production of at least 115,000 tonnes by 2025.
