Sharp decline in sales of fruits and vegetables ... in volume
FJ
Decrease in sales volumes of fruits and vegetables, but not the value.
Kantar Worldpanel Institute observed a sharp decline in sales of fruits and vegetables. British consumers bought -91,000 tons of vegetables and 40,000 tons of fruits in 2013 compared to the previous year. The salads are the only increaseing product in volume and value. For other products, higher prices offset lower volumes.
The institute suggests several explanations. First of all, the decline in sales of potatoes, young consumers preferred to other products such as rice and pasta. Then, by a greater awareness of food waste, the government recently reported that 15 million tons of food are thrown away each year in the UK. Finally, by change of habits, consumers have a tighter budget, they buy more frequently and in smaller quantities, so they waste less.
