Within ten years, French strawberry production has dropped fron 80,000 tones to less than 50,000 tones in the year 2007. On a European scale, this amounts to just 5% - the amount produced in the UK.
The degree of arganization of the producers has worsened too. Ten years ago, companies with a productionof 38,000 tones were members of producers’ organizations. Today the figure is no more than 15,000 tones.
As a result of this slowdown in the development, the funding of the CIREF is in danger.
This research and experimentation organization was founded- and funded- by the French producers, all members of the “Groupement de producteurs”. The purpose of CIREF is to use cross-breeding to develop varieties which taste good and are as resistant as possible to illnesses. The contribution amounts to 4.57 EUR per tone amd the budget is 300,000 to 350,000 EUR.
