The price increase intensified following the suspension of inspections in Michoacán by the United States due to violence against its officials.
In Mexico, the Alianza Nacional de Pequeños Comerciantes (ANPEC) has expressed great concern over the 40% increase in the price of avocados in the last two months. According to ANPEC, this increase is due to organized crime violence and the temporary suspension of exports to the United States. Insecurity, which has become constant in several regions, affects the family economy by increasing the cost of the Basic Food Basket by almost 19 pesos on average.
The price increase intensified after the suspension of inspections in Michoacán by the United States due to violent acts against its officials. Cuauhtémoc Rivera, president of ANPEC, said that criminal gangs have intimidated and kidnapped inspectors, seriously affecting agricultural trade.
Although exports have resumed, the local market continues to face high prices. ANPEC also expressed concern about blackmail on highways, where criminal gangs impose illegal tolls for the passage of goods.
ANPEC urges the next administration, led by Claudia Sheinbaum, to take effective security measures to protect the production and export of avocados, which are essential to Mexico's agricultural economy.
As the main exporting states, Michoacán and Jalisco play a crucial role in supplying international markets, including the United States, Canada and Japan. The current problem not only impacts avocados, but also other agricultural products that face similar risks along their transportation routes.
