Increase in potato production

The USDA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has released its latest estimates for potato production.
It says that the total amount of potatoes produced in the autumn in the U.S. will be 385 million hundredweight (17,460,000 tons), an increase of 5% over last year.
The USDA found that growing areas are up 6% over 2010, reaching 938,500 acres (380,000 hectares). Yield is down 6%, to 410 quintals per acre (45.95 tons / hectare).
Total production of potatoes in 2011 is expected to reach 424 million quintals (19.23 million tons), an increase of 5% over 2010.
