Oranges, lemons and mandarins in the Russian market in the beginning of November 2007

The absence of arrivals during week 44 kept orange market without aggravation of the situation in it. The main problem of the market was the stocks of bad quality Argentine oranges in regions. Hence the prices in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow were higher than in the rest of the country. Despite of the starting pressure on the market prices showed again enviable stability – no changes in comparison with week 43 – from 1,02 to 1,12 US$/kg for South Africa.
Definitely it was the bestseller of the week. Prices jumped to 2,00 US$/kg in Moscow as Spanish stuff was not on the market due to heavy rains in previous weeks. It was interesting to note that Turkey tried to fill up the gap of the Spanish produce offering their own brand “LOPI” which was well known Spanish brand. As the main supply of lemons to Russia was coming through the south the prices in Saint-Petersburg were on 0,15 – 0,20 US$/kg higher.
The quality of all the arrivals of Spanish mandarins was not good as it was the stuff after rains. Morocco didn’t yet start to press the market, just by rumors about large quantities. Though the first sales were running above 2,00 US$/kg level it was enough to bring down the Turkish price in Moscow from 1,60 US$/kg in week 43 to 1,40 US$/kg in week 44. As for the arrivals from Morocco it is expected about 6.000 tons in a period from weekend of week 44 till the middle of next week.
