Very positive 2020 results for the port of Antwerp with regard to the reefer segment. The increase in the volume of reefer containers in Antwerp is well above the average growth observed worldwide.
The port of Antwerp in 2020 handled a total volume of 1 million TEU (TEU- twenty foot equivalent) of reefer containers. This represents a variation of + 10.5% compared to 2019 and an increase well above the global average growth of the reefer market (3 to 4%).
In 2020 reefer containers represented 8% of all containers handled in the port of Antwerp compared to only 7.3% in 2019.
These results consolidate the port of Antwerp as a major player in the reefer segment. This increase in the volume of refrigerated containers is the result of several factors: an increased demand for healthy food; the extension of the offer with several first stopover services from Latin America; the specialized services offered by the port as well as its strategic position for rapid delivery to consumer markets.
"We find that traders of perishable goods attach great importance to a solid service delivery. In order to play a pioneering role in this area, the Port of Antwerp is investing considerable sums in digitization. The use of data in real time, concerning both transport and products, facilitates the rapid detection of bottlenecks and inefficiencies in the supply chain "underlined Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port of Antwerp.
