South African avocado exports set for expansion in China

Industry leaders see significant growth potential in the Chinese market.
South Africa is set to expand avocado exports to China after the market opened for South African avocados. According to local media, in 2024, South Africa shipped its first 40ft (about 12.2 meters) container, totaling 21 tons, to China, a small fraction of its total avocado exports. However, industry leaders see significant growth potential in the Chinese market, driven by an expanding upper-middle class and increasing consumer awareness of avocado health benefits.
Derek Donkin, CEO of the South African Subtropical Growers' Association, believes China could become a major market. However, challenges include building consumer awareness and competing with long-established suppliers. To address this, South African exporters are focusing on market education, quality control, and strong partnerships.
In addition to China, South Africa gained access to India in 2024, though high import tariffs could limit competitiveness against tariff-free countries like Tanzania. Expanding into new markets is essential for the continued growth of South Africa’s avocado industry.
