Spain has long been the only European country to produce avocados but several southern European countries (Greece, Italy, Portugal) intend to develop their production and thus take advantage of the strong demand.
Xavier Equihua, CEO of World Avocado Organization, told Spanish media El Confidencial that pilot avocado growing programs are being conducted in Greece, Italy and Portugal. These new productions could lead to a considerable increase in the volumes offered and thus support the consumption increase in Europe.
In Europe sales increased by 60% between 2016 and 2018, last year 650 million kilos of avocados were marketed.
According to data from the World Avocado Organization, in 2017 the highest per capita consumption of avocados in Europe was registered by Norway (2.44 kg), followed by Denmark (2.31 kg), Sweden (2, 09 kg), the Netherlands (2.02 kg) and France (1.86 kg).
