The Philippines target the promising Japanese market for okra / gumbo

For okra / gumbo the Japan market is estimated at USD 15 million, and will increase by $ 100 million in 5 years according to some projections.
Japan okra / gumbo is widely used; consumed in snacks, in salads or soups, cooked in sautéed or stewed.
In an attempt to benefit from this export opportunity, the PCCI, the Chamber of Commerce, teamed with IPB (Institute of Plant Breeding) Institute of Vegetable selection for a program of technical assistance to farmers. Genetic improvement of vegetables but also various forms of support to producers.
The future okra / gumbo will be disease resistant and have a longer shelf life compared to currently produced vegetables.
