About 10% of the Swiss population suffers from apples allergies, according to UFA-REVUE data, but these people will soon no longer have problems with consuming apples.
The FENACO COOPERATIVE has set up research and breeding programs for new varieties of apples. One objective is to develop new apples varieties for people with allergies.
Testing began with Swiss producers and over the next 12 months, nearly 10 000 trees will be added to the current crop.
The date for the first marketing of these anti-allergy apples is not yet known.
In Switzerland, the apple crops cover 4279 hectares with an annual production of 138 000 tonnes (FENACO digits). The average consumption per capita is 15.6 kg per year.
