Mango plantations fall sharply
MD
There has been a dramatic decrease in mango plantations, according to statistics from the Mango Ecuador Foundation.
The Mango Ecuador Foundation explains the decline in exports as due to lower a reduction in planting. Over the last 10 years the area planted decreased from 10,000 hectares to 5,500.
The United States remains the main buyer of Ecuadorian mangoes. The other destinations are Canada, Colombia, Russia and Europe. In terms of logistics, the fruits take 8-11 days to reach the U.S. market and 20 days for the European market.
This season, the expected production is 9 million cases. In 2010, Ecuador exported 9.2 million boxes of 4 kg.
