While the company Beta welcomes to start its campaign for precocious cherries, the result of two years of work in the Adana region, cherry growers in the region Kemalpasa Izmir, one of the most important growing areas, worry about the consequences of bad weather throughout the month of March and early April.
The rain and the cold have affected the production of 50 percent in some places, with frost damages which are yet to be assessed by the Aegean Agricultural Research Institute. While the mild winter promised a more than normal harvest, it would now only be 25-27 thousand tons of which 10 000 tonnes are expected from export.
According to the president of cherry growers of the region, despite the lower production, prices should not be flaming, because of the economic crisis.
