In 2023, the Peruvian Tahiti lemon marked a notable presence in the international market, reaching exports of close to 30,000 tonnes. This citrus fruit stood out for its growth in foreign sales compared to the previous year.
Sergio del Castillo Valderrama, general manager of ProCitrus, highlighted the positive trend in exports of Tahiti lemons from Peru, anticipating an increase this year. The supply of the fruit would be directed mainly to markets such as the United States, Chile, Canada and England.
In Peru, approximately 800 hectares of Tahiti lemons have been planted in the last two to three years, which promises a promising future for this crop. Although these new plantations are not yet in full production, they are expected to start contributing significantly to the volume exported from next year onwards.
Tahiti lemons are grown in Piura, Lambayeque, Lima, Ica, La Libertad, Pasco and San Martin, consolidating Peru's position as a key supplier of this citrus fruit in the global market.
