Sicily alarmed by small size of oranges
MD
Alarm bells are ringing in Sicily, where more than half of the harvested oranges are too small.
Low rainfall and high temperatures have resulted in over 60% of the oranges grown being too small to be sold through retail. Most fruits weigh 70-80 grams, less than half the normal weight.
For the Sicilian producers the harvests could be catastrophic without extraordinary measures, such as a promotional campaign throughout the country for the consumption of Sicilian citrus. The sector requires targeted interventions to support marketing and boost consumption.
