In this exclusive interview with Fructidor, we sit down with Mauro Biodo, the General Manager of Ageon, who shares insights into Ageon’s role in shaping the future of agriculture with their cutting-edge IoT system, educational initiatives, and a global approach to consultancy that helps growers optimize resource usage and crop quality.
Fructidor: Mauro, can you start by telling us more about Ageon, and the kind of support you provide to growers?
Mauro Biodo: Ageon focuses on delivering high-quality products for hydro-conditioning, and we have a consulting division that helps groups worldwide achieve the best results by reducing inputs like nutrients and water, and minimizing the use of fertilizers and pesticides. In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, we launched the Italian School of Hydroponics and Soilless, CTIF. Our goal is to train the next generation of greenhouse managers globally, as the industry is expanding rapidly but lacks a sufficient workforce.
Enhancing support with IoT: Real-time greenhouse monitoring and remote management
Fructidor: How does your IoT system enhance your support capabilities?
Mauro Biodo: Our proprietary IoT system is a crucial tool. It monitors every meter of the greenhouse environment and crop farming, allowing us to maintain control over parameters like CO2 levels, temperature, ECWC, and water content in substrates. This real-time monitoring, updated every five seconds, enables us to manage facilities remotely, whether they're in Sydney or New York, without needing to be physically present all the time.
Who needs Ageon?
Fructidor: Who exactly benefits most from Ageon's services?
Mauro Biodo: Our target audience primarily consists of greenhouse growers and their owners. We often start working with growers facing challenges in production or quality, and these relationships can last for decades. Our enduring partnerships are a testament to our effectiveness and the trust we build with our clients.
International hydroponic greenhouse management courses
Fructidor: You mentioned an international session for your school. Could you expand on that?
Mauro Biodo: Absolutely. For the first time this June, we will offer an international session of our school, conducted in English. It consists of ten lessons covering various aspects of hydroponic greenhouse management, such as nutrient solutions, substrate management, and real-time climate handling. This will be held via webinars and is part of our effort to globalize our educational offerings.
Fructidor: Is there a charge for participating in these sessions?
Mauro Biodo: Yes, there is a fee for the ten lessons. We view it as a transfer of real know-how, providing substantial value to participants.
Amsterdam Green Tech
Fructidor: Looking ahead, what are Ageon’s plans for international expansion?
Mauro Biodo: We are poised to increase our global presence significantly. We will be at the Amsterdam Green Tech in June with a booth to showcase our expertise. Hydroponic and soilless cultivation is becoming a necessity worldwide due to climate change and the need to reduce water use and pesticide reliance. Our methods offer a more sustainable approach, especially in regions like the Netherlands and the Middle East, where greenhouse cultivation is extensive.
Fructidor: Is there anything else you'd like to share that we haven't covered?
Mauro Biodo: I think it's crucial to emphasize that the rise of microponics, especially in Italy over the last five to six years, has been significant. Having a partner like Ageon, with 30 years of experience, is incredibly valuable. We provide specialized support that enables big companies, particularly those working soillessly, to thrive in today's agricultural landscape.
