Agreement between Sudan / Egypt / Ethiopia about the Nile
FJ
Sudan and Egypt finally gave their approval to the building by Ethiopia of the large dam on the Blue Nile, called "Grand Renaissance". The agreement was signed by the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, his Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, and Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.
Opposed to the project for months, Egypt has received guarantees that the dam would not reduce its share of the Nile waters (55 billion cubic meters). Sudan who was himself a supporter of the project was the promise of preferential prices for the supply of electricity generated by the dam.
The "Grand Renaissance" dam will have a total water storage of 74 billion cubic meters. With an output of 6000 megawatts of electricity it will have a capacity three times that of the Aswan Dam.
It will be the largest of all hydroelectric dams in Africa, representing 8 times the total electricity production in Senegal or 7 times that of Guinea. The dam will enable Ethiopia to export electricity to neighboring countries (Sudan, Djibouti, Kenya, Yemen).
