In order to boost the availability of the product on the domestic market and curb soaring retail prices, the temporary ban on onion exports has been extended.
Local media report that the Egyptian government has extended the ban on onion exports until March 30, 2024. The original ban began on October 1, 2023 and was due to last just 3 months.
A traditional vegetable and staple in Egyptian cuisine, onions are normally among the most affordable vegetables in Egypt. But onion prices have soared to EGP 35 (USD 1.13) per kilo on some local markets, a sharp increase on EGP 12 (USD 0.39) per kilo a year ago.
