In New Zealand, the 2022 kiwi harvest has just started in the Te Puke region. Forecasts indicate a higher harvest volume than the previous season.
The 2022 kiwifruit harvest has just started in the Te Puke region, with RubyRed quality. This variety is harvested first, followed by the Gold and Green varieties. Harvesting traditionally peaks in mid-April and continues through June.
According to forecasts, this 2022 harvest could reach 190 million trays, thus greatly exceeding the 177 million trays harvested last year and which were considered a record volume. On average, each tray contains about 30 kiwis.
The reopening of the border is deemed too late by the sector, which needs 24,000 people to pick and pack the harvest.
New Zealand has some 2,800 growers who produce kiwifruit from more than 13,000 hectares of orchards between Kerikeri in the north and Motueka in the south of the country.
