In Peru, citrus exports made between January and August have already exceeded the total volume exported in 2019. This historic result would be the consequence of the increased demand for citrus in the main destination market.
COMEX, the foreign trade body announces that citrus exports between January and August reached a total of $258 million, an increase of 43% compared to the same period of 2019.
Regarding volume, Peru exported 230,228 tonnes of citrus fruit in the 8th month of this year, already exceeding the total volume exported in 2019. Fresh mandarin shipments accounted for 88% of the total citrus exported between January and August 2020.
According to COMEX, these good results are due to increased demand from the United States, the main destination for Peruvian citrus fruits, which bought for $126 million, or + 67.6% compared to the period January-August 2019. Others destinations also increased their demand, such as the United Kingdom (+ 11.4%), the Netherlands (+ 20.5%), Canada (+ 18.5%), China (+ 42.46% ) which are the main importers of Peruvian citrus fruits.
“All over the world, the consumption of foods rich in vitamin C has been recommended for their antioxidant properties and as allies in leading a healthier life,” said Sergi del Castillo, CEO of Procitrus, the producers' association.
