Reduced harvests, but prices should increase

Pear production of Mantua (Pera tipica Mantovana IGP) looks low compared to potential. Producers expect the harvest to be reduced by half. For the main variety, Abate, the rates even lower of 80%. Fundamental cause: the disastrous weather conditions with excessive rains and hail.

The producers retain the hope that the rarity of the product will cause an increase in price that may compensate losses. Last year's poor production had pushed up the prices. The main export markets remain: Libya, France and Germany.

"Pera tipica Mantovana IGP" is produced in six main varieties: Abate, Conference, Decana del Comizio, William Kaiser, Max Red.
