Peru is diversifying its agricultural exports, and after the success of blueberries, new berries such as cherries and raspberries are being tested.
According to Alfonso Velásquez Tuesta, advisor to Midagri, cherry is in great demand worldwide, but the varieties tested in Peru have not been successful because they require colder climates.
However, he sees great potential in raspberries, especially for small producers. This fruit could complement blueberry production, as it can be sent to processing plants when blueberries are not available.
Raspberries are in high demand, require less investment than other crops, and could double domestic consumption compared to Chile. In addition, phytosanitary problems in Chile open an opportunity for Peru.
INIA has successfully tested the “Heritage” variety in Tacna and hopes to expand it in the north of the country. Raspberries are aimed at the frozen industry, which already has plants in Lambayeque, La Libertad, and Piura.
