The European Union strengthened controls on borders for fruit and vegetables imported by non-EU countries.
Food safety still improved this year in the European Union thanks to the end of pesticides market and to intensification of controls on borders.
The Committee harmonized the legislation relative to the maximal limits of pesticides residues in foodstuffs, leading to the end of about 700 substances on 1000 listed.
The rules, organized in January 2010, strengthened borders controls: controls and analyses of pesticides for a large range of fruit and vegetables as mangoes, bananas, eggplants, zucchinis and pears imported by certain non-EU countries.
Since this implementation, about 13 600 batches of fruits and vegetables imported were controlled. 10 % of these products were tested and 10 % of the tested products showed themselves not corresponding to the European requirements.
