Cameroon is now the leading African producer and the 5th largest producer of bananas in the world.
Cameroon dethroned the Ivory Coast and became the first banana producer in ACP countries (Africa, Caribbean and Pacific) with 278,450 tonnes produced in 2015.
With 278,450 tons of bananas in 2015, Cameroon surpassed the Ivory Coast, which had produced 260,000 tons of bananas last year.
This performance places Cameroon as the world's 5th largest supplier of bananas behind Ecuador (1.36 million tonnes), Colombia (1.31 million tonnes), Costa Rica (0.95 million tonnes) and the Dominican Republic (0.32 million tonnes).
As regarding exports, the volume at the end of July stood at 152,384 tonnes. That is a decline of 3.4% compared to the figures for 2015, according to data from the Cameroon Banana Association (Assobacam).
