Eureka SL - the first seedless lemon in the world

Eureka SL is South African product of the citrus mutation breeding program. It is regarded as the first seedless lemon in the world and highly sought after in the beverage and food industry. Eureka SL, however, has shortcomings and it is therefore necessary to improve the cultivars' qualities in order to be able to supply the growing demand for seedless lemons. Plantings of Eureka SL for both commercial farmers and previously disadvantaged farmers are still being allocated and care needs to be taken in order to ensure that production is viable and cost-effective. The impact of current research will result in more cost-effective production with about 50% higher yields and improved fruit quality. In turn, this will secure and strengthen the new market for seedless lemons and South Africa's name in the fruit industry world-wide.
