Imported strawberry enters Kyiv markets again
Ukraine
Friday 06 July 2007
Strawberry season was very short this year in Ukraine. Usually the peak of strawberry season lasts for around three weeks; this year the most part of harvest was picked during 10-15 days because of hot weather. Starting from the second half of June the prices for strawberry have been rapidly increasing; by the end of June national strawberry has almost disappeared on the wholesale markets (there were small shipments of strawberries, supplied from the households of the population on the retail markets). Today small quantity of imported strawberries is present on FARMER wholesale market (Troyeshchina residential area); the product is mostly of Dutch origin. Berries have flawless marketable look; the product costs US$7-9/kg.
It is worth mentioning that Ukrainian producers would easily satisfy the demand of the inner market for a considerably longer period - it is possible to extend the strawberry season by means of the improved production technologies. Many companies have already been making real steps forward - they supply (or plan to supply) strawberry to the national market off-season.
