Celebrity launch for first cherries of new season
Spain
Monday 17 March 2008
TV celebrity Paloma Lago earlier this week picked the first cherries to come into production in Europe this year, effectively marking the launch of the new cherry season in the Northern Hemisphere.
The event equally marks the launch of a month-long marketing campaign entitled Cherries Glamour, during which the stonefruit fetches prices unlike those at any other time of year.
Catalonia-based cherry producer SAT Edoa is set to market just 70 tons of cherries through its partners in key markets in Europe over the next few weeks. The cherries - the only ones in production at this time of year - fetch stellar high prices and are grown on some 5ha of hothouses in Lerida, one of Spain's main cherry-growing areas.
